Talk about the calm before the storm. In the first official trailer for the upcoming superhero epic Spider-Man: No Way Home, Tom Holland and Zendaya chill on a roof reading the paper while holding hands just before the universe begins to implode all around them. The three-minute preview debuted on Monday night (August 23) and it opens with Spidey and Zendaya’s MJ re-affirming their romance before the web-slinger’s fateful decision to mess with the space-time fabric goes horribly awry.
“This is a good one: ‘Some suggest that Parker’s powers include the male spider’s ability to hypnotize females,’” MJ reads to Holland’s mild-mannered Peter Parker as they lay on their backs and get a much-needed respite from the chaotic world below. “Can we just stay up here all day? It is just so crazy down there,” Peter asks her before a montage rolls of MJ getting a web-assisted trip through the city amid peeks at Parker’s secret identity being revealed by newspaperman J. Jonah Jameson (J.K. Simmons).
The problem explodes as Parker faces punishment for killing Mysterio and the couple have to hang their heads in shame as boo birds pepper them with hate during a public walk of shame. “Does any part of you feel relieved about all this,” she asks Petey as they lay in their beds and FaceTime at night. “What do yo mean?” he asks. “Now that everybody knows you don’t really have to hide or lie to people.”
“For the record,” he says, “I never really wanted to lie to you, but how do you tell someone that you’re Spider-Man? Now everybody knows.” Tired of hurting the people he loves, Parker asks Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) to help him wipe everybody’s memories of his secret identity. Spoiler alert: that fateful action leads to complete chaos, not to mention the return of the notorious Doctor Octopus Oc (Alfred Molina).
It’s going to be an epic fall for Zendaya, who will also co-star in the anticipated reboot of the sandy sci-fi epic Dune with Timothée Chalamet (debuting in theaters and on HBO Max on Oct. 22). Spider-Man: No Way Home will appear exclusively in theaters on Dec. 17.
