Revered soul singer suffered a crash that changed his life and altered his promising career

The lead singer for Harold Melvin and The Blue Notes was such a superstar. He was cited as sounding much like Marvin Junior of the Dells but had his own style that led to hits such as If You Don’t Know Me By Now, Close the Door, and the Grammy nomination for I Can’t Live Without Your Love.

Teddy Pendergrass experienced so many up s and downs it’s painful to learn about his amazing but tumultuous life.

On March 18 1982 Pendergrass was in a terrible car crash and trapped in the wreckage for close to an hour. He was paralyzed from the chest down due to a spinal cord injury.

Whitney Houston

He struggled to find a recording deal after his injuries but eventually signed with Asylum Records and recorded an album titled Love Language.

One song featured then unknown Whitney Houston. The song Hold Me was a major break for the young Houston.The album reached number 38 on Billboard.

His work influenced a long list of artists including Kanye West.

On January of 2010 Teddy Pendergrass died of respiratory failure at the age of 59. His wife Joan was by his side.

Plans are still in the works to make a biopic of the Life of Teddy Pendergrass. Truly a unique and gifted singer whos life experience of tragedy will hopefully be remembered in balance with the amazing gifts he gave to so many.
