The late actor and comedian was best remembered for his role of the scheming thief Ezal in the 1995 classic film Friday, which Ice Cube and DJ Pooh wrote. The rapper shared a black-and-white photo of Johnson on his Instagram and expressed how he wished he could’ve brought back his character Ezal in the long-awaited fourth installment of the franchise, titled Last Friday.
“Sad to wake up to the news about AJ Johnson passing away. Naturally funny dude who was straight outta Compton at the same time,” he wrote. “Sorry I couldn’t bring your character Ezal back to the big screen in Last Friday…”
Johnson was also known for his role as E.Z.E. in Kid ‘n Play’s 1990 film House Party, and he later appeared in House Party 3. The late actor also had film credits in Lethal Weapon 3, Menace II Society, The Player’s Club, BAP*S, How to Be a Player, I Got the Hook Up, I Got the Hook Up 2 and Hot Boyz, while his television credits include appearances in Martin and Malcolm & Eddie. The Compton-born comedian also rose to fame as he performed at clubs in Los Angeles throughout the 1980s and ’90s, and appeared on Def Comedy Jam.
The cause of Johnson’s death has not been publicly revealed.
DJ Pooh also shared a comedic GIF of a scene from Friday where Johnson runs down the street with stolen goods, writing on Twitter, “Rest easy AJ!”
